Cadiz City Council Member Todd Wallace says the local community can still lay claim to the most often produced, edible ham biscuit in the world.

“They were going for the largest, but it wasn’t even as big, the biscuit wasn’t even as big as our actual biscuit in terms of diameter,” Wallace noted of the community of Smithfield, Virginia, that set the Guinness World Record for the largest ham biscuit back in the early 2000s.

Cadiz has had the longest streak of providing Kentucky’s largest and the world’s largest edible ham biscuit, he told his fellow council members during Tuesday’s Cadiz City Council meeting.

The 40-year-old oven that has traditionally made the local biscuit is being retired, and celebrated, at this year’s 50th annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival, set for Friday and Saturday in downtown Cadiz.

There will be no biscuit from the oven this year, but ham biscuits will be available for festival-goers from other venues.

Cadiz Mayor Todd King during this week’s council meeting ushered in the annual festival with a proclamation that recognized the event’s rich history.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Stan Humphries read the proclamation at Monday’s Trigg Fiscal Court meeting.

The council meeting also saw several other items of business on Tuesday night, including a couple of reports during separate public hearings conducted during the council session by Lexie Pendleton, a community development specialist with the Pennyrile Area Development District.

Pendleton talked with the council members about grants that are being sought on behalf of the city of Cadiz.

The pair of grants include a Cadiz Railroad Trail Rehabilitation and Safety Improvement Project and a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant.

The rail grant is intended for improvements on the community’s existing rail trail, according to Pendleton.

She said the second application will support efforts to establish the Between the Rivers Gateway Park near the Interstate 24 Business Park.

The Gateway Park will serve as a green space for use by residents and tourists to the local community, officials said. Tuesday’s meeting also saw the mayor read a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Kelly Coker of Sanctuary Inc., spoke to the council, noting that domestic violence is an issue that affects almost everyone.

Cadiz Police Chief Tyler Thomas reported that the Cadiz Police Department investigated 10 criminal cases in September, arrested 13 people and responded to 868 calls for service.

Thomas noted that October will be a busy month, given the ham festival and the community’s Halloween Safe Night.

The chief urged people to be courteous and patient with the crowds that are expected to be on hand for both events.

Thomas said the only animals allowed during ham festival will be service animals.
