Revolving Sushi Kingdom restaurant opens in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT — One of the Lowcountry’s newest sushi restaurants was packed during a recent lunch service. We were, however, able to get a seat right away, which isn’t a guarantee at Revolving Sushi Kingdom.

The Mount Pleasant Towne Center eatery, which debuted in September, has routinely drawn long lines outside the doorway at 1594 Palmetto Grande Drive. Part of the enthusiasm can be attributed to the conveyor belt that curls throughout its dining room in a 15-minute-long loop, carrying bluefin tuna nigiri, salmon and avocado rolls, Japanese-style fried chicken, dumplings, seaweed salads and more.

Patrons seated at one of the dozen or so booths bordering the belt can simply help themselves to a plate, each of which costs $4.95, and start eating. Pile up the discarded lids for your server to tally up at the end of the meal.

Guests can also order from the iPad at each table, and the food will be delivered by a server — robot or human — or an animal-shaped train traveling on another curving track.

The format follows that of Japanese kaiten sushi eateries, which are said to have originated in Osaka, Japan, in 1958. Revolving Sushi Kingdom is more than just a novelty, though, for its owner, Anna Chen, and chef, Hang Li, take great pride in sourcing high-quality fish from Japan, including whole bluefin tunas that are broken down in-house.

And if the conveyor belt isn’t fully stocked at all times, that’s because the chefs in the back are constantly making rolls, dumplings and other hot and cold plates to maintain freshness.
