My GF ordered this one on Amazon but the pestle that came with mine is different. Is this legitimate?

I read a random comment on a different post that said this was normal. I just used it now to make a dressing for papaya salad and after eating I saw a lot of particles in the bottom of my bowl. I didn’t notice anything while I was eating but its definitely rock, I tasted it. I originally seasoned it I think 5 or 6 times with rice and salt before using and never saw any black specs in the dust. I’ve used it a few times for salsas and guac and never noticed anything crunchy. I was a little extra aggressive this time because there was a lot of ingredients to the dressing but nothing drastic like smashing the pestle.
Should I go back and season again another few times?

I think you have to cure it more. Grind rice in it until the rice stays white.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think the rock is going to cause any problems if it’s truly lava rock.
But there are unscrupulous molcajetes that are made from cement and won’t ever stop releasing grit.
It’s just flavor
Post pictures of your molcajete
Just grind some rice until it’s white , google how to season a molcajete
As everyone said, try to get it to a point you don’t see much.
Fun fact – one way they’re able to tell when societies switched over to farming is by their teeth – grinding grains inherently results in some grit added. That means what they ate was grinding teeth down over time…
Fortunately with modern flour we don’t have to worry about the added rock, but things like a molcajete are best left for infrequent use.
Nope, it’s defective. Send it to me 🙂
