Mexican Food

Tex-Mex

Hello.
My question is, why do some Mexican restaurants (albeit tex-mex, I know is not traditional Mexican cuisine) serve a bowl of what seems to be chipotle ranch with the complimentary chips&salsa? Is it just for the white people or is this traditional in modern Mexican food?
Thanks!

what they serve with chips are these kinds of restaurants tends to vary by region, city, etc. just look in this subreddit and you’ll see everything from what you showed, coleslaw, queso…I saw one once where they served cream cheese and pepper jelly. very bizarre and i can only guess it is trying to cater to the local white population which tends to have different tastes around the country.

I am from San Diego and this sort of thing does not exist, just chips and some sort of house salsa, for at least the sit down restaurants. Taco shops don’t serve anything

Sorry. You’re going to have to say where that was served because it’s not normal.

In Jalisco we use to serve a starter of Tools and (handmade) salsa

In Mexico it’s common to serve totopos (what you call chips) with a mix of mayonnaise and chipotle, tipically at seafood restaurants. Ranch is not a common dressing in Mexico; you can easily find it in stores but it’s not a pantry staple.

Texans also smother everything with queso which is made with America Cheese.
