I would grill the onion, not the Arbol. They are dried so they would burn really quick. Instead try briefly cooking them in pan, with out without some oil.

Yes to charred onion.
If you can put a pan on the grill and briefly toast the chiles de árbol that would be ideal. I remove the stems and de-seed them first, but that’s up to you.

Quarter the onion and get some char on all sides of the pieces. You can toast the arbol on a skillet or comal if you have one, but if you do be careful they’re quick to burn. As soon as they are fragrant take them off the heat and soak in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also skip toasting them and just steep them in the hot water as they are and it won’t make a huge difference imo.
