The FIFA World Cup 2026 is about to kick off in Mexico City. To make it an even bigger deal, Mexico’s national team will play in the opening match here. Hundreds of thousands of soccer fans will make a trip to a place that’s tremendously rich in history and culture, even if its notorious traffic tests everyone’s goodwill at times.
The capital city has one of the world’s great food scenes, but most of the top spots already get plenty of ink and digital space. We’re here to steer you toward less famous places, where you can sample dishes like quesadillas stuffed with huitlacoche, or corn fungus, cheese-crusted rib eye costras, and a sandwich allegedly created for Fidel Castro.
One thing we won’t be pointing you toward is a single taquería. The reason is simple: There are thousands of excellent ones across the city, from street-side stands to sprawling, 33,000-square-foot operations. It’s easy to find one yourself. Instead, we’re spotlighting another essential, often overlooked establishment: the tortería. In this case, it’s one that made a cameo in Alfonso Cuarón’s *Roma*. We’re also pointing you to an excellent new food-focused cocktail bar and a power business meal spot that will be pouring free tequila shots after some World Cup games.

In Mexico if you see a taxi driver or a policeman eating there then is probably very good.
