
Sardines fish curry or mathi puli is a mouth-watering dish of South India with little bit spiciness of red chillies and sweet & sour tanginess of tamarind(a special type of tamarind is used which is called malabar tamarind/kerala tamarind/Kudam puli). It tastes awesome with rice and you won’t need any other side dish if you have this curry!
How to make sardines fish curry…..
Ingredients & preparation::
Garlic 5 pods
Ginger 2 tsp
Pearl onions or shallots 10 nos
Oil 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds 2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds 1 tsp
Curry leaves
Onion chopped 1 medium
Tomato sliced 1 medium
Red chilly powder 2 to 3 tsp
Turmeric powder 1 tsp
Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder 1 tsp
Sardines fish(traditional kerala name: mathi/chala) 6 nos
Kudam puli (malabar tamarind/kerala tamarind) , scientific name:
Dried red chillies 1 or 2
Salt
**** Grind chopped onions, garlic, ginger together in blender and keep it aside.
**** Heat oil in a pan and pop mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds.
**** Add onion-garlic-ginger paste into the oil. Add curry leaves. Saute for few minutes.
**** Add onion, tomato and let it cook covered. Add salt as needed.
**** Soak tamarind, kudam puli in water and keep it aside.
**** Once tomato is cooked, add washed sardines(mathi) fish pieces to the pan, let it saute n cook for few minutes.
**** Finally, add the tamarind juice along with tamarind pieces to the pan, add water as needed and cook covered until fish is cooked.
**** Garnish with curry leaves and dried red chillies at the end (roasted in a little bit oil).
Sardines fish curry is ready to be served!
