A dish can tell the story of the chef who created it, while a single bite can take a diner back to a meal shared with family. These are a few recent meals that made me smile with memories.
Friendship Over the Years
On a spontaneous night out, I somehow managed to catch up with three different groups of friends who all happened to be at PEWA by Pono Potions (1115 Bethel St.). Shareable plates are the way to go, and I recommend the whipped chèvre or the Mediterranean board with grilled babaganoush, hummus and crudité. What I remember most, though, was thinking how lucky I am to be surrounded by people I’ve shared many memories with over the years.

Family Meal Memories
When I snagged a reservation at Alan Wong’s (5000 Kahala Ave.), it was the perfect excuse to get my family together for dinner. We started with the popular whole tomato salad with a li hing mui ume dressing that was flavorful. I ordered the braised duck that had a creamy chickpea and barley mix with shiitake mushrooms and taro. I’m happy we got to experience one of the year’s most anticipated restaurant openings together. Even with busy schedules, our family still can make new memories together.

Solo Adventures
Mala Market (multiple locations) is one of my favorite sandwich spots on the island, so anytime I find myself spending the day in Hawaii Kai, I try to stop by. This particular visit reminded me how I’ve grown to appreciate my own company over the years. My go-to order: the pastrami sandwich with a plantation iced tea. The view while enjoying the meal — priceless.
