Kaua’i (Island News) — Kauaʻi residents who lost food because of power outages caused by Hurricane Lowell may be eligible to have a portion of their SNAP benefits automatically replaced.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday that it has approved Hawaiʻi’s request to provide automatic mass replacements equal to 60% of benefits for qualifying SNAP households on Kauaʻi.
The waiver means affected households covered by the mass replacement will not have to individually report food lost because of storm-related power outages.
SNAP recipients in areas hardest hit by Hurricane Lowell may have a portion of their August benefits replaced.
Residents in other affected areas who are not covered by the automatic replacement may still request replacement benefits. Those recipients will need to file an affidavit with their local office confirming they lost food because of the disaster.
The USDA said additional information about eligibility and the replacement process will be provided by the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services.
The assistance comes as Kauaʻi continues recovering from Hurricane Lowell, which caused widespread power outages and other damage across the island.
