MADISON — The Wisconsin America250 Commission is encouraging residents to participate in volunteer projects, acts of kindness and commemorative events marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The commission is highlighting a nationwide effort organized by 9/11 Day to pack more than 17 million meals in more than 51 cities. A meal-packing event will be held in Milwaukee to support families experiencing food insecurity.
Adult volunteers are needed to assist with registration, coordinate supplies and help keep the event running smoothly. The Milwaukee event is scheduled for Sept. 11 at Marquette University’s Alumni Memorial Union. Volunteer information is available here.
“When we look back 25 years, an enduring story of September 11 is how Americans helped each other and their communities,” said Christopher Kolakowski, chair of the Wisconsin America250 Commission. “Stepping up to support our neighbors through service today honors their memory in the most tangible way possible.”
Residents can also pledge an act of kindness through the national Unite for Good campaign. Suggested activities include donating blood, supporting a local food pantry or writing a note of thanks to first responders.
“9/11 is about ordinary people stepping forward for one another,” said David Paine, co-founder and president of 9/11 Day. “Whether packing meals side-by-side in Milwaukee or doing a simple good deed in your hometown, every volunteer helps turn a day of loss into a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve when we unite for good.”
Residents can search for memorial ceremonies and civic gatherings in Wisconsin and across the country through the America250 national event calendar.
The Wisconsin America250 Commission was established through 2021 Wisconsin Act 95 to highlight the state’s role in the nation’s history and encourage statewide participation in the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
