I spent Sunday afternoon living the dream with Drew Green from Saunders & Associates, playing 9 holes at Poxabogue in Sagaponack. After hitting a few balls in the completely wrong direction, we finally made it through the course and were starving. Happily, Fairway Restaurant is back open, and there was nothing more obvious to us than to eat there.
Fairway was closed for a while, but now it’s back, and it’s exactly the same, which is a great thing. The little stools are still there, the same waitresses are there, the same chefs are there, and the same delicious smell of bacon wafts through the place. You can tell it’s been spruced up a little with some new tables and paint, but for the most part, nothing has changed. Even the menu looks identical.
I love this place. It’s like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting. You’ll have some potato farmers at one table and a billionaire at another, all of them enjoying an omelet or a chicken sandwich. You can’t beat it.
We ordered a round of Arnold Palmers, a can’t miss here, and I went with the Reuben, a homerun that comes out with a jar of Grey Poupon. I love the owner of this place; he’s committed to keeping it what it is, and the waitress recognized me immediately, even though it’s been practically a year since I’d been there. Drew went with a tuna melt, which he absolutely crushed, and we also got a side of bacon, because how can you not at Poxabogue. I think it’s something to do with their grill, but you can’t get better breakfast bacon than at Fairway.
Like the golf course, this restaurant is understated on purpose, and you can feel it throughout. It’s easy on purpose; you can chill out, have a coffee, read the paper, and enjoy your life. That slow vibe, that easy feeling, it’s immediate here. I could eat at this restaurant every day. I probably will.
