A customer who was eating oysters at a famous Oyster Bar in downtown Seoul found a 5cm-long piece of cutter knife in the food, but the store’s response was insufficient, sparking controversy. The customer claims that the store was consistent with a complacent attitude, saying, “I will give you two new oysters,” even though it was a dizzying situation that could have swallowed the blade.
Recently, posts on social media (SNS) have spread to accuse the damage suffered while visiting an Oyster Bar. Author A said, “I don’t usually cut oysters with scissors and eat them, but on this day, I asked because I wanted to cut them with scissors and cut them in half, and a piece of a cutter knife about 5cm came out from under the oyster.”
A, who did not want to ruin the atmosphere because there were many customers in the store at the time, quietly went to the counter and protested by showing a piece of knife. The employee apologized in embarrassment, but the response was all that brought him ‘two new oysters’ moments later, he said.
Mr. A, who was already drinking wine, tried to wrap up his seat without causing much trouble on the spot, but he once again vented his anger at the store’s attitude during the calculation process. The boss came to the table and didn’t apologize, and the first thing the employee said at the checkout was, “Do you want me to pay for you?”
When A asked, “Did you know that the knife was cut off while trimming the cave?” the store said, “I knew.” When asked, “Then where did you think the knife went?” he answered, “I thought it would have fallen on the floor,” indicating that he did not confirm the possibility of foreign substances mixing at all.
Later, the store informed that it would not accept food prices, but A said, “No matter how much I think about it, the order was wrong. If I had swallowed that knife, I would have gone to the emergency room during the Chuseok holiday,” he said, venting his anger.
“There was a knife-level cutter that could hurt people, and I tried to cover it up with two new oysters,” he said. “At least I should have come and apologized in person, explained the circumstances, and promised to prevent a recurrence.” The more successful the business, the more important it is to respond to an accident than to taste or atmosphere,” he said.
As the controversy grew, Mr. B, the actual representative of the company, started to extinguish the situation himself.
In an official apology, Mr. B acknowledged both the serious hygiene and safety negligence of the store. “A piece of an oyster knife was found in an oyster provided to the customer on the 24th,” B said. “The oyster knife was damaged by an employee’s mistake in controlling the force in the process of opening the cave, and there was a very big mistake provided to the customer without collecting all the damaged pieces.”
B also apologized for the store employee’s unconventional way of responding immediately after the incident. “I, the CEO, have all the responsibility and fault for not properly managing the store and training the staff,” B said. “We will thoroughly check and responsibly improve the work process and safety management staff training to prevent the same from happening again in the future.”
