INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Love Bug, a cozy new eatery known for its heartfelt comfort food, has opened its doors at the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis.
Abby Ripberger, the founder and owner, started The Love Bug after a life-changing moment with her son, Hank, in 2019. At 7, Hank was hospitalized with a serious case of rheumatic heart disease caused by untreated strep throat.
“It was terrifying,” Ripberger said. “I left my corporate job to focus entirely on caring for Hank. That’s when I began prepping meals every week, trying to make healthy, homemade food that felt like a warm hug.”
Her passion turned into The Love Bug food truck, which Ripberger launched from a vintage 1973 canned ham camper parked in her hometown of Tipton, Indiana. What started as a way to care for her family quickly grew into a local favorite.
The restaurant’s menu honors Ripberger’s Polish and German roots, featuring classic grandma recipes made from scratch. It is comfort food with a twist, accommodating many dietary restrictions.
“I have an egg allergy,” Ripberger said. “So we make sure we have plenty of gluten-free and vegan options to include everyone.”
Popular dishes include the turkey bacon panini and roast beef Manhattan, alongside vegan favorites like oatmeal cream pies and a black bean burger. The French toast gets a special shoutout for its locally sourced brioche from Rise and Shine Bakery.
Family remains at the heart of The Love Bug. Ripberger’s sister recently moved back from Louisville to manage the Garage Food Hall location. Meanwhile, Ripberger’s father continues to deliver meals in Tipton.
Hank, now 14 and doing well on medication, sometimes helps out in the food truck — a small reminder of how this whole journey began.
“Our mission is simple,” Ripberger said. “Feed people well, love people well and create spaces where people feel at home.”
The Love Bug at the Garage Food Hall brings that mission to the city, offering comfort and community for all who visit.
