Kings Food Markets will shut two New Jersey stores by Jan. 2, 2027. As many as 122 workers will lose their jobs. The stores sit in Hillsdale and Whitehouse Station, a spokesperson said on Monday.
On Friday, the company sent the state a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice. It says the layoffs will take place on or before Jan. 2, 2027. The notice lists 122 employees who face layoffs once the Hillsdale store closes.
“We announced plans to close the Kings Food Markets locations in Hillsdale and White House Station, New Jersey,” said Albertsons Supermarkets spokeswoman Dana Ward on Monday, per Patch. “These locations will close no later than Jan. 2, 2027.”
Ward said the leases on both stores are running out. The company chose to put its energy into other sites instead.
“Like all retailers, we regularly evaluate our store portfolio and real estate footprint to ensure we are best positioned to serve customers and operate efficiently,” Ward said. “With the lease for these locations coming to an end, we made the decision to focus our resources on other locations.”
Many workers may get a spot elsewhere. “Our goal is to place as many associates as possible in other stores,” Ward said. “Our Human Resources and Labor Relations Teams will be working diligently with each affected associate and his or her labor union to find other work, wherever possible, that is consistent with the applicable law or labor agreement. Anyone who is unable to secure a job will be eligible for severance in accordance with applicable laws.”
Right now, Kings runs 16 stores in New Jersey. After the closures, 14 will remain.
The news follows another shift in the area. An Acme store in Edgewater closed earlier this summer. A Shoprite has since moved into that space.
