No officers were injured, and there is no threat to the community, Poole said.

The incident began as a domestic situation, according to the sheriff’s office. Poole did not say who fired, whether anyone was struck or what led officers to the Food Lion.

Sheriff Simmons requested an SBI investigation, which Poole described as standard protocol for this type of incident. The SBI will lead the investigation.

A WFMY News 2 crew saw vehicles from the sheriff’s office, Davidson County EMS and the SBI at the scene Sunday evening.

The sheriff’s office said it would not answer additional questions at this time.

People working near the Food Lion said they heard gunfire and tried to understand what was happening.

Scott Rumley was talking with a coworker when he heard the shots. He initially thought the sound was fireworks.

“What I thought at first was fireworks, but it definitely was not fireworks,” he said.

Rumley said he witnessed the incident unfold and recorded video on his cellphone. He also described seeing what he believed was bullet damage to nearby businesses.

“Dollar General got shot up. There were two bullet holes in it, and I think Domino’s had a bullet hole in it.” Rumley said. “You can see it in one of my videos, and there was a lot of kids there. There was a lot of people there”

Laurie Socha was working inside a nearby business when she heard something and went toward the front to find out what was happening.

“Yeah, I was inside. I was in the very back, and I heard something, but I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. I came up to the front. People are rushing to the front,” Socha said.

Socha said she called her husband to let him know she and a relative were safe.

“I called my husband it was 3:39 P.M. to let him know that me and his cousin were safe, where nothing happened to us,” Socha said.

The SBI will lead the investigation into the shooting. The sheriff’s office has not released additional details about what happened or the circumstances that led to the incident.

Authorities said they would provide any additional information that can be released as it becomes available.
