MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A former Madison priest was convicted Tuesday after being charged with child sex crimes in Waupaca County.

Andrew Showers, 38, pleaded no contest to and was found guilty of attempted child enticement, attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child and child pornography possession.

Other counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

A sentencing hearing was scheduled for January 12, 2027.

Showers was arrested in August 2025 after agreeing to meet with a minor, who was actually an undercover Clintonville Police Department sergeant posing as a 14-year-old girl.

In March, Showers was charged with child pornography after police said digital evidence was found on his phone.

Showers is also accused of attempted grooming of a child and bail jumping charges in Marathon County. He is scheduled to have a telephone scheduling conference in that case on Oct. 22.

The Diocese of Madison stripped Showers of his priesthood in June, saying he would no longer serve or be recognized as a religious leader after Showers petitioned dispensation from his priestly obligations. Pope Leo XIV granted that petition.
