A pizza delivery driver was robbed in Lake Worth Beach, leading to a police chase and a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Boynton Beach, with a witness sharing her account of the chaotic events.
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. —
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has identified Gregory Dobkins as the man shot and killed by deputies following a police chase and on-foot pursuit that ended on Jog Road in Boynton Beach on Tuesday.
Authorities said the incident began Monday night in Lake Worth Beach when Dobkins allegedly robbed a Domino’s pizza delivery driver of cash. Nicole Burrill, a witness, said she was sitting on her front porch along North K Street when she heard a commotion.
“I hear this crazy screaming up the street,” Burrill said.
Moments later, she said two men ran through her flower bed.
One of the men was the delivery driver, who Burrill said was chasing after a man who had just robbed him.
“They’re two feet from me, so I stand up and say, ‘Get off my yard,’” Burrill said.
She described a scuffle between the two men, during which two packages were tossed onto her lawn.
“I put the light on, [and] realize packages that were dropped were a small pizza box and breadsticks,” Burrill said.
The sheriff’s office said deputies located Dobkins’ truck the following morning, but he refused to stop, leading to a chase that ended in a crash on Jog Road. Deputies pursued Dobkins on foot, and moments later, gunfire erupted.
The sheriff’s office confirmed Dobkins died at the scene. He was unarmed but had a criminal record dating back to 2003, including serving time for a robbery 20 years ago.
Reflecting on the events, Burrill said, “It just seemed to me that it was a lot to do over $60.”
The delivery driver, who injured his hamstring during the altercation, is recovering, according to his coworkers at Domino’s.
The investigation into the deputy-involved shooting remains active.
