How to make Kathryn’s easy pasta sauce
“Stop buying shop bought pasta sauces,” she said. “Save your money for something else and do this instead.”
Showcasing the four ingredients required, Kathryn filmed herself selecting a tin of chopped tomatoes, a packet of frozen chopped basil and another of frozen chopped garlic, along with a small packet of parmesan — plus some pasta.

Once back in her kitchen, she said: “This shines a light on how amazing a tin of tomatoes can be. I make this pasta sauce all the time. We’re gonna start with olive oil, quite a lot, maybe three tablespoons. To that, we’re going to (add) frozen garlic, about a tablespoon. Once you see the garlic just about to turn golden, add the tined tomatoes. Quarter-fill the tin with water and add that to the pan.
“Going to add some grated Parmesan. This is going to add lots of flavour and it’s going to make your sauce really creamy. And then, you can use fresh basil, but this is a store cupboard sauce, we’re using ingredients from our store cupboard. so I’m gonna use frozen, about a tablespoon.
“Simmer it for about five minutes. Alright, let’s season it with salt and pepper. I’m gonna leave it chunky, but at this point you can blitz it if you prefer a smooth sauce.”
Kathryn explained the recipe makes two servings, setting aside half in a container for another meal. She then combined the cooked pasta with the sauce, incorporating a splash of the reserved cooking water and mixing everything together thoroughly.
“It’s the best way to finish off a pasta,” she said. “Tell me that doesn’t look like something you wouldn’t get in an Italian restaurant? And it’s made from a budget tin of tomatoes.”
