Salsa

Anybody else use old (washed) trail mix and other containers for their homemade salsa? Some family tell me it’s weird but it works perfectly.

Not specifically trail mix containers but I do use random glass jars! Definitely not weird! It’s economical 🙂

  2. I reuse glass jars but never put salsa in plastic.

It may be perfectly fine, but I would be careful putting my acidic salsa into any plastic container that is not meant for liquids or not meant to be reused. Who knows what is leeching into your salsa.

  4. I use mason jars and vacuum bags if I am freezing. I’ve got mason jars that are 40+years old. Been used for canning in my family for ages. I don’t actually can very often, but they work great for short term storage and replace ment kids/rings are cheap.

You may want to stick with glass.

Re-using plastic containers that are not meant for re-use can result in toxic chemicals leaking out of microcrevices that develop over time just from simple washing.

You shouldn’t put acidic salsa in plastic containers that were not designed to hold liquids. There are different grades of plastic for a reason.

I sometime choose container on their salsa storage ability. Large glass jars ftw.

I use glass bottles and jars all the time. Plastic I usually only reuse for non food items. I wouldn’t store food, especially acidic food, in something that can’t be sterilized or thrown in the dishwasher. And if it’s plastic meant for dry goods, who knows what it will leach.

  9. Wouldn’t put an acid in plastic – who knows what that jar contains with wet foods

Man I wanna know where people think this is weird and see what these “normal” people are like. They sound boring.

Never plastic, but everything glass. It’s crazy.

I reuse the containers for craft supplies ☺️

Kimchi jars are passed around my in-laws, depending on who is making a batch. There’s a pickled bologna jar that’s been thru ten batches.

  14. I only use glass jars for salsa, as well as anything containing tomato or liquids. If I keep a plastic container, I only store dry items in it and I never use it in the microwave.

I never put salsa in plastic. Canning jars are the way. Plastic is nasty

I come from a Southern family and I reuse the butter and cool whip tubs 😂😂

  17. As crappy as plastics are made I’d avoid them especially with an acid food as salsa. Get a few quart or half gallon glass canning jars.

  18. I don’t use plastic jars for Salsa but use glass jars – tighter seal, stays fresher longer in my opinion

I would highly recommend buying some mason jars for this purpose. Certain plastics and acids don’t play well together. That salsa looks delicious, definitely don’t want anything contaminating it!
