Question about tomatillos-is this okay to use? New to using them. Husk hasn’t split but the fruit does fill it. Used another that was in similar condition. Want to make sure it’s ripe. Thank you!

I was referred to this sub to get help with my question about tomatillos. I’ve never used them before and wasn’t sure how to tell if they’re ripe. The one I’ve used already is similar to the photos I posted. The husk was filled with the fruit and the husk was in a similar color and condition.

  2. The husk normally splits/tears/falls off during transport. As long as the husk is papery and britle then I think you’re good to go.

How are you eating these? – If I were to assume you’re making a salsa then one underripen tomatillo shouldn’t be an issue.

It’s definitely ready. Peel, wash, prep, and eat that puppy!

Looks good. Many prefer them cooked. I like to grill them.

Husk normal. Roasted them give lot better flavor then just boing them straight . Highly citrus acid in them . Just in case using lime don’t have use much but still do. Up to person making it . It’s there preference.

It’s fine, just be sure to wash it after it’s been peeled.

My wife boils them with chilies and that’s the base for her salsa

Y’all are eating tomatillos raw? You don’t get sick?

Looks good! A tip my MIL (who makes the most insane sauces, salsa, and food; shout-out to Guerrero cuisine) gave me was to choose the tiniest tomatillos because they tend to be less bitter and more flavorful/spicy.
edit: tomatillos are not spicy, had a brain fart typing this out, evidently.
