Cooked straight on some hot coals until a little charred is the way to go, just add a sprinkle of salt.

I’m sure it tastes good but I am scared that somehow a spine would get missed somehow and end up stuck in my mouth or throat forever. One time my co worker was playing around with a little cactus with very fine hair like spines and got them all over the desk. I touched the desk and then my face above my lip and got one stuck there. 7 years later I can occasionally still feel it.

Disclaimer, if you try to clean them yourself better use some gloves, nopales have “alguates” those arent painful but very annoying.
At least until you get experienced with touching them.
One more thing, try them with chile rojo, just like the type we use for carne con chile , trust me

Could the spines be effectively removed with a torch?

I’ve cut the thorns off once and never again! Ouch! I’m lucky to have a farmer’s market near me that has them ready to go.
