I bought this molcajete online and after soaking it underwater for 5hr and scrubbing it clean, I notice that it still leaks immediately from two spots on the bottom. Will curing it with rice, salt and garlic seal this or will it continue to leak? I intend to use this for salsa so I need to know if it’s better that I return it and try another retailer. Thanks!

I would grind a lot to rice and then seal the outside with some kind of mortar glue if the hole is small. My idea would be to fill the hole with rice and essentially compact it.
Depending on the hole size and inconvenience of going to the store, might be worth returning though.
The rock they’re made of is very porous and is likely just leaking residual water from the soak. Let it get dry, grind rice in it many times, and it should be ready. If it still drips from the bottom after making some salsas that’d be peculiar but let us know what happens. From the picture it looks just like mine at home which works great.
The water was added to test after it was completely dry. Is it typical for uncured molcajete to be leaking a little?
