When to harden off vs split pepper seedlings

Should I pause hardening to split them or wait until they are acclimated?

4 pictures showing 5 pots, each with 2 strong seedling contenders. I live in zone 7a, probably won’t be able to transplant til mid-May. I have worked them up to \~6 hrs outside yesterday, sunny and windy around 60-64 degrees.

Should I split now, or just cull (prefer split if possible)? Should I let them get a bit hardier outside for another few days first? Should I pause hardening before or after the split? Not sure how to balance stronger plants vs. competing too long, and shock/recovery time from hardening and from splitting.

If anyone has had to do both at the same time, or recommends one before the other, or has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you ✌🏼

Time to split those for sure

Would personally split them up, let them recover for a day or two, then harden off

You’re going to have a hell of a time trying to split those up at this point. Those roots are going to be very tangled. Maybe there’s a way to split them up but I don’t see how to keep both without significantly setting them back.
