Kerala Style Spicy Mutton Liver Pepper Fry | Soft & Juicy Kaleji Fry Recipe

Learn how to make soft, juicy and flavorful Kerala style mutton liver pepper fry (kaleji fry) at home. This recipe uses a coarse masala, coconut oil, curry leaves and freshly crushed black pepper to give you an authentic Kerala taste.

Mutton liver cooks very quickly, so it is important to avoid overcooking to keep it soft and tender. In this recipe, I show you a simple method to achieve perfectly cooked liver with a rich, spicy pepper flavor.

This dish pairs perfectly with Kerala parotta, appam, chapati or steamed rice.

Ingredients

To remove bad smell from the liver :
400 g Mutton Liver (cut into small bite-size cubes)
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder (haldi powder)
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Vinegar (sirka)
Water for soaking Liver

For Coarse Mixture :

50 g Shallots (whole or roughly chopped)
10 to 12 (15 g) Garlic (whole or roughly chopped)
A small piece (6 g) Ginger (roughly chopped)
½ tsp Fennel Seeds (saunf, perumjeerakam)
½ tsp Black Peppercorns (sabut kali mirch)
1 or 2 Green Chilli (use as per your spice tolerance)
5 to 7 Curry Leaves

Other Ingredients :

2 tbsp Coconut Oil
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder (haldi powder)
1 tsp Kashmiri Chilli Powder
1 tsp Coriander Powder (dhania powder)
1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
1 sprig Curry Leaves
100 ml Hot Water

Ingredients for roasting the cooked liver
2 tbsp Coconut Oil
½ cup (25 g) Coconut Slices
3 to 4 Dry Red Chillies
1 sprig Curry Leaves
1 large Onion (100 g) – thinly sliced
40 g Shallots (roughly sliced)
10 g Garlic – sliced
½ tsp Fennel Powder (coarse ground)
1 tsp Black Pepper Powder (kali mirch powder)
½ tsp Salt (use as per taste)
1 sprig Curry Leaves

Note : tsp is teaspoon
tbsp is tablespoon
Use Oil as per your diet restrictions
Use Chillies as per your spice preference
Always wash curry leaves & coriander leaves before use
