Hot Time for All: Festival promises spicy day of activities

Southwest Louisiana will be bringing the heat on Saturday as the inaugural SWLA Hot Sauce Festival kicks off at the West Cal Arena and Events Center at 401 Arena Road in Sulphur.
Billy Lucas, host and organizer, said he came up with the idea three years ago after attending many hot sauce festivals in Texas, Florida and California. He decided to take it upon himself to get one started in Southwest Louisiana.
“Louisiana is where hot sauce really started to begin with and for us to not have a hot sauce festival down here is really weird,” Lucas said. “I love hot sauce and there’s a lot of people that love hot sauce so what better way to give back to the community than to create a festival that pertains to some of our culture?”
The festival will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 8 p.m. At 10 a.m. Lucas will deliver opening remarks, light a torch and take a shot of hot sauce to initiate festivities.
Lucas started his own salsa in 2020. He said he got tired of buying store-brand salsas and decided to make his own. His sauce is made from locally owned fresh ingredients, and instead of using distilled vinegar for all of his sauces he said he uses apple cider vinegar and sugarcane vinegar.
“When you buy Tabasco and Louisiana Hot Sauce you get a lot of the vinegar flavor and I got tired of that taste so we started our own,” Lucas explained.

There will be 60 vendors at the festival, including several booths selling homemade sauces, salsa, seasonings and more. As guests walk to each vendor they will see a QR code to scan to vote for the People’s Choice Award that will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
There will also be vendors with handmade jewelry, soaps, rosaries, engraved cutting boards and more.
DJ Leauxlife will keep the energy high as festivalgoers taste free food samples throughout the day. Food options include tacos, pizza, corndogs and nonalcoholic beverages.
At 10:30 a.m. there will be a cornhole tournament followed by a kid’s gummy worm challenge. The first one to finish will receive a trophy. Second and third place will receive a medal. Entry fee is $5.
Don’t miss the chili pepper eating contest at 3 p.m. Visit ww.leagueoffire.com to enter. Competition is free to enter with a $200 first-place cash prize and a championship a belt.
There will also be a taco-eating contest for teenagers at 5 p.m. Each contestant will be given three tacos. The kicker is one of the contestants will receive a taco with hot sauce and the first person to eat all three of their tacos wins. Entry fee is $10.
The adult hot sauce chugging challenge will take place at 4 p.m. with a $20 entry fee. The taco eating and hot sauce chugging winners will receive a trophy for first place and medals for second and third places.
Lucas said he hopes to move the festival to May next year to coincide with crawfish season and for cooler weather.
“This is our first year and we’re just getting our foot in the door to grow into something huge,” Lucas said.
