MITCHELL — A defunct Main Street restaurant is about to be rebuilt from the ground up.
A sprawling multi-lot Main Street building at 511 N. Main St., formerly the Back 40 Taphouse Grill, will be torn down and rebuilt with two stories, according to officials involved with the plan. A restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner will be on the second floor, with retail spaces for shopping on the ground floor. The restaurant will feature a full service bar.
The Back 40 land and buildings were sold by Keke Leiferman to Israel Espinosa in January for a stated value of $300,000 with five property lots, according to the warranty deed.
The Mitchell City Council approved the transfer of a liquor license from Justin Thiesse to Israel Espinosa at its Monday, Aug. 17 regular meeting. The license will remain inactive until the restaurant is open. Josh Espinosa told the council the project blueprints were in the final stages of development.
“We plan on doing a multi commercial retail space to allow other businesses and bring some traction to downtown city of Mitchell,” said Josh Espinosa.
Israel Espinosa also owns El Columpio, Corona Village and Mya’s Teriyaki.
“We will tear everything down as we’ve done with all the other restaurants. We do it the right way,” Josh Espinosa said.
