SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Construction on 8th Street and 3rd Street along Weber Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls is expected to be complete around mid-August. Railroad crossing improvements will be installed, which include new lights, crossing arms, and a median.
With that come street closures that have affected some local businesses since construction began in May.
Roots of Brasil has been a staple in downtown since 2022. While manager Courtney Hardie understands that construction needs to happen and will benefit the whole city, sales have gone down, and she’s asking for continued support.
“We created a map online that highlighted the easy ways to get to us, which included the viaduct and access off of 6th Street,” said Courtney Hardie, Roots of Brasil manager. “We also printed banners, and there’s a banner outside on the railroad saying that we’re offering half-priced sangria during construction.”
The current improvements for the railroads will meet federal requirements that will allow the city to eventually receive future quiet zone designation. This is huge for Sioux Falls, but Roots of Brasil is feeling the side effects. During what should have been the restaurant’s lunch rush, many tables were empty.
“I have had to cut down on our weekend staff, especially, just to be able to accommodate for the slower rush,” said Hardie.
Despite the current setback, Roots of Brasil is staying positive, especially with their annual Roots Fest coming up.
“We really bring such a unique perspective and cultural cuisine to our downtown area, which really impacts it due to our restaurants per capita,” said Hardie.
While the construction is temporary, the impact felt by businesses can be permanent, which is why Roots of Brasil hopes that people remember that they are still open, excited to serve people, and that taking a small detour now and then can be the best way to support local businesses.
