The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a Class I recall announcement on August 26 for approximately 24,900 pounds of frozen buffalo chicken products manufactured by Shanghai Ravioli Corporation of Boston, MA. The reasoning, and high classification, are due to the fact that the chicken was never inspected, as is required by law.
A Class I recall is issued in situations where there’s a reasonable probability that use of a product will cause serious health “consequences or death,” according to the FSIS. The FSIS also reported that food produced without inspection could contain undeclared allergens, bacteria, or contaminants that could put those who eat it at risk. Thankfully, the FSIS isn’t aware of any reports of people becoming ill from eating the chicken at this time.
The USDA reports that during FSIS surveillance activities, the recalled products were found to be packaged with false marks of inspection.
Which states received shipments of the recalled chicken?
The chicken was shipped to food service locations in five states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Food service locations distribute food to restaurants, cafeterias, and institutions like schools and hospitals. FSIS did not report that the recalled products were shipped to grocery stores or other retail locations.
The FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled products might be in food service refrigerators or freezers, so the food could be unknowingly served and consumed.
Which specific chicken products were recalled?
Here are the recalled items:

The establishment number “EST. 18004” was used on the packaging, which the FSIS says doesn’t have a federal grant of inspection.
