Buddy’s Chicken & Waffles has come full circle with a second location on South Tacoma Way — not far from where the original carry-out operation began.
Along with the Lincoln District location on G Street and the food truck, Buddy’s now has a growing presence throughout Tacoma. I’ve been following the business since the early pop-up days, and it’s been fun to see how far owner Buddy Brown has come. I stopped by the truck while it was parked at Lakewood’s Rollies Tavern for what would be my first time trying the sweet-and-savory combination I would come to love. (In fact, I covered it for South Sound back in July 2021.)
Sure, the waffles come in irresistible flavors like strawberry shortcake, cookies and cream, chocolate chip, and a variety of seasonally rotating creations. But my favorite is still the classic buttermilk. It’s simple and goes perfectly with some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. You can also turn up the heat with spicy chicken, or if chicken and waffles aren’t your thing, skip the waffles altogether and go for a chicken sandwich and fries.

Our family loves it so much that it’s become part of many of our celebrations, from birthdays and graduations to plenty of other occasions. There’s something special about seeing a place you discovered early on become well-loved by others too, while still delivering all of the things that made you a fan in the first place. And Buddy’s delivers on both counts.
