It’s being replaced by Bentendo, which will serve food in jubako, a type of multi-tiered bento box.
After decades in Vancouver’s sushi scene, Tokyo Joe’s has closed in Vancouver.
The sushi restaurant has been open for more than 30 years, with most of them spent at 955 Helmcken St. in downtown Vancouver. But last month the restaurant quietly closed with a simple message taped to the door.
“After many wonderful years, I have decided to retire,” reads the note. “Following our closure, a new Japanese restaurant will be opening in this location.”
Tokyo Joe’s has been around since the early to mid-’90s. The first location was opened in Kitsilano by Joseph Ree, and the second followed a few years later at the Wall Centre on Helmcken. The original location closed years ago.
In the ’90s, the simple restaurant garnered a reputation for quality sushi at a budget price.
“We are deeply grateful for your warmth, loyalty, and support over the years,” reads the note.
New Japanese restaurant opening soon
The spot on Helmcken is quickly being filled as a new restaurant called Bentendo prepares to open. Renovations are underway in the little restaurant space.
The new restaurant will offer Japanese comfort food served in jubako, a type of multi-tiered bento box.
While a menu hasn’t been announced, on social media, Bentendo promises to mix Japanese tradition with a Vancouver perspective.
“BENTENDO is inspired by the flavours and food culture of Japan—and made for Vancouver,” reads the post.
No opening date has been announced.
There’s a different Tokyo Joe restaurant in Richmond, with a different owner.
