REVIEW: Sazon provides decent food, for an equally decent price – The Sunflower

Let me just preface this review by saying that I have very little experience with Mexican food. Horrible, I know. But I also think that my lack of familiarity allowed me to go into the experience at Sazon with more of an open mind. I figured that even if I didn’t enjoy it, I could still appreciate a place close to campus that offers a 10% student discount.

I was warmly greeted by the lone server who told me to seat myself, and served me right away. I ordered a Mexican coke, which is always amazing because it’s made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup that is used in American coke. Chips and salsa were brought to the table soon after.

The chips were good — just your average tortilla chips. The salsa was decently tangy and had a good texture that was not too runny.

I ordered the quesadilla meal which comes with a side of beans and rice for $10.99. The three quesadillas were filled with chicken, the protein of my choosing, mozzarella cheese, onions and cilantro.

The meal overall was great. The chicken was juicy, but not in a way that can be mistaken for soggy. It had the perfect amount of cheese, chicken and onion, although it could’ve handled just a little bit more cilantro.

Even though the amount of onion and chicken was good, I would’ve liked to have them a bit more evenly distributed throughout the quesadilla. The quesadilla was cut into three sections and there were several bites where I would get a mouthful of onion with no chicken and vice versa. However, when I did manage to get a bite that had all four ingredients, they blended together perfectly.

The tortilla was cooked just enough to give the quesadilla a bit more of a solid texture.

The quesadilla was full size and half an inch thick. The beans were about the size of an iphone and the pile of rice was barely half the size of the beans. Overall, the portions were pretty reasonable, especially for the price.

The rice was fine, nothing much to speak of. However, I would be impressed if they managed to mess up something as simple as rice.

The beans were a bit dry and could’ve been heated up a little bit more since I dug into them first and they were barely room temperature. It was sprinkled with mozzarella cheese, but it was unfortunately not melted enough to actually add any cheesy flavor to the beans. Luckily, the quesadillas were a good temperature; hot but not so hot that you’re forced to sit and wait for an eternity for your food to cool off while you sit there hungry.

If you like classic Mexican food with a home cooked feel, then you should make the trip down to Sazon.  I am looking forward to returning to Sazon and trying what other tasty items their menu has to offer.
