For 70 years now, The Village Voice has been synonymous with what’s happening in New York, whether through its coverage of the downtown arts scene or the writers it has engaged as contributors, from James Baldwin and E.E. Cummings to Tom Stoppard and Colson Whitehead.
So it feels fitting that Harry Styles, a one-man cultural institution if ever there was one, would use a special issue of the Voice—which largely ceased its print operations in 2017—to help him bid farewell to the city; October 31 marked the end of Styles’s 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden during his Together, Together tour.
“It has been an honour to live and work in your city for the past three months,” Styles writes in an opening note addressed to “friends, strangers, citizens of New York.” “The energy of the audiences, the openness, the dancing, the sheer joy, will never leave me; it altered me.”
He continues: “The Village Voice has long been both a creator and unique record of the cultural life of New York City and it is a privilege to collaborate with the iconic arts paper to tell a bit of the story of 30 nights of Together, Together at Madison Square Garden. It’s not the whole story, of course, but it’s a little piece we can share right now. I look forward to hearing your stories in the years to come, and sharing mine.”
