Republic, MO. — This week’s Friday night matchup between the Republic Tigers and the Kickapoo Chiefs isn’t the only thing worth talking about!
Every week, I will be hitting the road to uncover hometown favorites that make each community special in our new special, Hidden Gems.
This week, I traveled to Republic, Missouri, to visit their local farmer’s market. This market in particular is special and they do not allow any type of reselling. All products sold are made or grown by the people you see running the booths. Anyone interested in becoming part of the market must be reviewed by a volunteer board who verifies all products are truly homemade.
While you might visit for the fresh produce, homemade goodies or local vendors, there’s a lot more to this market than what’s for sale. Spend just a few minutes here and you’ll quickly realize this place was designed to build community.
“We love the community,” said organizer Eric Messenger. “We moved to Billings just down the road and we just wanted to bring the community further together and grow this market.”
For some vendors, it’s a chance to share something they’ve worked hard to create. For others, it’s become a weekly tradition. And for the people who come through the market, it’s a chance to support their neighbors while discovering something new.
Many locals have made visiting the market apart of their routine. Erica Smith visits every week and says, “It gives people a place to sell their produce, meet new people, and also help highlight what you can do with your little plot of land here in the Ozarks.”
That’s what makes the Republic Farmers Market a Hidden Gem. It’s not just a place to shop. It’s a place where the Republic comes together. So, before you head out to support the Tigers this Friday night, come check out one of the places that makes this community special!
