Oklahoma City’s Dos Cinco reopens after deadly shooting, supported by community

Dos Cinco, a family-owned restaurant, has reopened its doors after a tragic shooting, with the community’s support helping them move forward

Patrick TalbotOKLAHOMA CITY —

Dos Cinco, a family-owned restaurant, reopened Friday for the first time since a deadly shooting, with the decision driven by the support of their community.

“It’s definitely nervous,” said Mia Trujillo, manager of Dos Cinco. “You know, with what happened, it’s a really big impact on the community. And you know, our community here at Dos Cinco is sticking with us, but it’s still nervous outside of that community of what people are thinking and wondering.”

The restaurant had closed its doors in the aftermath of the tragedy, taking time to grieve, reflect, and prepare for the future. Trujillo said the community’s unwavering support has been vital during this time.

“They’re all being supportive,” Trujillo said. “They’re still welcoming themselves here with us, and whatever we decide, they’re here for us. We do a lot of things with the community here. Like, for their back-to-school thing we’re doing for kids, meals for the children. Like, we do a lot for this community, so for them to have our back just shows who we are as a community.”

Trujillo acknowledged the reopening has been a difficult decision, particularly for families who lost loved ones in the shooting.

“Me personally, I would say, for the families who did lose someone, how they may feel,” Trujillo said. “I wouldn’t know how to feel either. But this is our family business. This is what we all rely on.”

She emphasized that Dos Cinco has always been more than just a restaurant.

“I hope Dos Cinco brings families and communities together more,” Trujillo said. “We come together, yeah, but we should come together more, and I hope they know we’re doing our best to make this the safest place they can come.”

The restaurant has implemented additional safety measures as it moves forward and hopes customers will feel comfortable returning.
