LANSING, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Firing up the grill this Labor Day? The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is reminding residents to practice safe food handling at cookouts, picnics, and tailgates.

“Labor Day is a great time to gather with friends and family, and a few food safety steps can help keep everyone healthy,” said Tim Slawinski, Director of MDARD’s Bureau of Food Safety and Animal Health. “By keeping food at safe temperatures, cooking meats thoroughly and practicing clean handling, Michiganders can enjoy upcoming gatherings safely.”

Officials say it’s important to keep cold foods cold, hot foods hot, and to avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat separate from ready-to-eat items.

They also recommend cooking meats to safe internal temperatures, washing hands frequently, and not leaving food out for more than 2 hours.

MDARD says taking a few simple precautions can help prevent foodborne illnesses and keep gatherings safe.

September is recognized as Michigan Food Safety Education and Awareness Month, you can visit MDARD’s food safety page for more information.
