Nearly every San Antonian knows the pain of one of their favorite restaurants closing for good. However, fans on the Northeast Side may see a popular eatery make a comeback.
LasCarretas, located off Perrin Beitel Road, is a Mexican restaurant with a 4.4-star Google rating. The casual dining spot offers signature dishes such as carne guisada and puffy tacos, along with bakery staples like pan dulce and coffee cake, according to Yelp. It also features indoor and patio seating, with photos showing colorful interior decorations and artwork.
Residents have recently expressed concern about its alleged lack of operation, with dozens of Facebook users reacting to a post from resident RaquelCarreon asking whether anyone had information on the restaurant’s status because it was “closed all weekend.” The post was made on Monday, October 19. Another was sent on Thursday, October 22.
“They are closed for good from what we have heard,” one user, Tonya Valled, replied.
Many users expressed sadness over the alleged shutdown, believing the reports were accurate. However, the restaurant recently dispelled the rumors with new outdoor signage. MySA staff visited the site on Wednesday, October 28, to find an “opening soon” sign on the front doors.
Another customer who spotted the update, Tom Sandoval, shared it in a public San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group, captioned “The question remains how soon.”
Many locals celebrated the development and tagged their loved ones in the comments. Sandoval, a frequent visitor, told MySA the business has been temporarily closed for about three weeks for unknown reasons. He says the community learned of the closure when the doors were locked during normal business hours.
“With its location across from the main post office, it is a very popular place with the USPS employees and customers,” Sandoval said. ” They have reasonable prices and great lunch and breakfast taco specials.”
They added that many people were sad, confused and bewildered about the restaurant’s shuttering, “but seemed happy to know they are re-opening soon.”
MySA reached out to the business for comment on Facebook but did not hear back in time for publication. The phone line did not accept voicemails or calls. This story will be updated with new information about the reopening as it becomes available.
